DIY

"We're too friendly here." -the librarian at the Los Alamos library asks me to use the self check-out computer to help raise its stats -- apparently the machine has experienced a decline in use because everyone prefers the cute little librarian ladies to check them out. Lucky for me, even though I went over to the self checkout, the librarian still scanned my books.

Il bel far niente

"The beauty of doing nothing is the goal of all your work, the final accomplishment for which you are most highly congratulated. The more exquisitely and delightfully you can do nothing, the higher your life's achievement." -Italian philosophy, according to Eat, Pray, Love.

Ad pages. Duh.

"I want to know why this magazine doesn't have page numbers." -some irate older man who wanted to know why every single page of the April 2010 issue of Outside didn't have a page number. Clearly the guy has a lot of time -- and anger -- on his hands.

"I did have a cold a while back. But the truth is, I was just plain lazy." -a little old lady explains to her little old lady friend why she's been missing water aerobics class.

Making Piece

"Book deal or not, I love writing. I love the process of writing, of turning the noise inside my head into prose on the page, words that may be of guidance, or at least entertainment, to others." -Beth Howard, a writer, baker and soon-to-be author of a book (about pie) that I am quite excited to read. Check out her blog, Web site or her awesome house.

Solo

"A human being is a very social creature, and ninety percent of what he does is done only because other people are watching. Alone, with no witnesses, he starts to learn about himself -- who is he really? Sometimes this brings staggering discoveries. Because nobody's watching, you can easily become an animal ... you have to have something -- some force, which allows and helps you to survive without witnesses."
-a passage from The Tiger, by John Vaillant.

More Snow?

Sweet Talk

"You'll have to excuse me, I'm eating a piece of candy." -the 74-year-lawyer I had to call for a fact check this week. I guess when you've been a successful attorney for more than half a century you can do whatever you want on the phone.

Midwest Musings

"It was kind of like a Christmas morning for a lot of people ... it happens in the middle of winter when you're thinking about sunshine and summer; it brightens your day." -the RAGBRAI director reflects on this year's route announcement party. Read my post here.
