"The following products are the real deal: hand-crafted, regional American foods, all winners in this year's Good Food Awards. You'll find some of these at your local supermarket; others you'll need to buy online, unless you're lucky enough to live nearby." -Forbes.com. Hooray for Patric Chocolate of Columbia, Mo. for making the list!

Love in the Desert
"I met a lady in my drifting days, I quickly fell under the spell of her loving ways. A rose in the desert, I loved her so-oo, in the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico." -intro to NM's state ballad, as discovered through fact checking the state's centennial timeline. Other fun facts: New Mexico's state aircraft is the hot air balloon, and the bolo tie is the state's official neckwear.

"Eric Hansen is assembling and coaching an Outside team that will compete in the Quidditch World Cup, held November 12-13 on Randall's Island in New York. Yes, it's incredibly nerdy -- that' why Hansen is leaping in with broomsticks flying." -a snippet of the funniest e-mail I've received in a while. Anyone in the NY area want to try out?

Then another year just like this one, on and on, ad infinitum." -"Jane" by George Bilgere. About the tough realities of growing old. Sigh.

Women Writers
"Headstrong and tough, Lois Lane was based on the real-life journalist, Nellie Bly. She was known around Metropolis as a top-notch investigative journalist. And even though she was Superman's love interest, she was Clark Kent's equal in the newsroom." -a quick read about fictional characters inspiring female writers. Harriet the Spy, Carrie Bradshaw and Nancy Drew were among others on the list. I did love Nancy Drew, but mostly I was an Anne of Green Gables fan.
